Kailaboration, April 2014 - Tin Man Series - Photography by Kai Sutton.

As you may recall in the film, “The Wizard of Oz,” one of the characters Dorothy encounters is the Tin Man. She answers his plea and helps the Tin Man by oiling his rusted limbs. Once freed, he introduces himself through song, “If I only had a Heart.” The Tin Man dreams of having compassion for other creatures and culture. “I’d be tender, I’d be Gentle and awful’ Sentimental regarding love and art.” After his brief song and dance, Tin Man joins Dorothy to see the Great Wizard in hopes to fill the void in his chest.

I view the Tin Man as someone who can’t find the heart of gold within themselves, so they speak of their remorse and can only wish for something better. I’m sure everyone knows at least one Tin Man, whether it be a friend or family member. What shocks me is how some Tin-Folk refuse to see anything positive in the life given to them. I would be a big hypocrite if I didn’t call attention to my own pessimism, but I feel sorry for people who would frown on everything and let their bitterness rust over. Tin-Men know how to take joy out of things.

Oh Yes! We spoke to one another after tonight’s show. I’m very inclined to make my own mask now. Love the whole gig!
